WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Private and sovereign creditors should step up efforts to restructure the debt of countries like Chad, Zambia and Ethiopia, or risk encouraging countries in need of assistance, International Monetary Fund President Kristalina Georgieva told Reuters Next at a conference on Friday.

“Do it,” he said, calling for more timely debt restructuring agreements and a freeze on debt service payments when a country seeks support under the Common Framework established by the G20 economy and the Paris Club.

“Why would they be involved forever if needed, and at that time, they are still expected to provide debt service?” he said.
