Greek coach Van’t Schip has left after failing to qualify

Former Netherlands international John van’t Schip has resigned as coach of Greece after failing to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Qatar on Friday.

The 58-year-old former Ajax winger left the post five weeks before his contract ended on 31 December, the Greek football federation said in a statement.

Greece has not won a major tournament in Brazil since the 2014 World Cup. Van’t Schip took office in August 2019 and tried to change to a younger generation of players, but the changes didn’t have much of an impact.

The team finished third in the Qatar World Cup qualifiers behind Spain and Sweden after winning just two of their last eight matches.

“We created a team spirit that was embraced by the players and staff and we could all focus on our top priority, the national team and football,” van’t Schip wrote in a post on Instagram, also revealing his disagreements with the federation. “Our approach to football is different and it doesn’t match.”

The federation has not appointed a replacement and said the selection process “will not be in a hurry”.
