Greenwood asked to be selected for England until 2022, Southgate says

England coach Gareth Southgate said Mason Greenwood had asked not to qualify for the World Cup qualifiers in the first half of the season because he wanted to focus on settling at Manchester United.
Greenwood made his England debut against Iceland in September last year, along with Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, before being sent home for breaking COVID-19 protocols.
Since then Greenwood has not played in England.
The 20-year-old striker, who missed the European Championship due to injury, has scored four goals for United this season and was questioned because he was not in the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino.
“We had a discussion before camp in September and we came to an agreement. (FA technical director) John McDermott and I went to United and had a good conversation with Mason and his family,” Southgat told reporters.
“We agreed that we would park until next year, basically. We would leave the autumn matches. If he settles in the Manchester United team, then he will be very close to an England national team or an English team, so he acknowledged that.
“He wants to play in England, that’s clear. We’re not going to choose Mason because we don’t think he’s good enough or because we’re not happy with what he’s asked for.
“We fully understand that and are happy to wait.”
England are in first place in Group I, three points ahead of Poland with two games to go.
