(Reuters) – Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham Donald Trump will meet with a U.S. congressional committee investigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6, according to a source familiar with the meeting.
Grisham served as White House press secretary from July 2019 to April 2020, when Trump’s wife headed Melania’s staff.
Grisham left the job on the evening of January 6, 2021, after groups of supporters of the former president attacked the Capitol in an attempt to prevent President Joe Biden’s certificate of victory in the November 2020 election.
Grisham released a new book last year accusing Trump of mistreating his staff and ousting Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Grisham first reported his cooperation with the House of Representatives Electoral Commission to CNN, and announced his decision after a phone call with U.S. Democrat committee representative Jamie Raskin, who encouraged him to meet with the board.
Investigations into the worst attack on Congress since the War of 1812 have largely closed the doors so far. The select committee has interviewed more than 300 witnesses about Trump’s pro-violence and Trump’s response to it.
About 140 policemen were attacked during the uprising, according to the Justice Department. The day after the attack, an officer who had fought against the rebels was killed and four other guards guarding the Capitol committed suicide. Four rebels were also killed, including a woman shot by a police officer who was trying to climb out of a broken window through a door inside the Capitol, leading to a site known as the Speakers’ Lobby.
Current Trump spokeswoman Taylor Budowich said in a court file on Dec. 27 that she has worked closely with the commission, producing more than 1,700 pages of documents and giving an affidavit of about four hours.
