MILAN (Reuters) – Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is in hospital in Milan for routine tests, his personal doctor said on Sunday, the 85-year-old president decided not to appear and a day later.
Berlusconi, a four-time Italian prime minister, underwent major heart surgery in 2016 and has also had prostate cancer. They have been admitted to the hospital more than once in the last year, after COVID-19 was hired in 2020.
Alberto Zangrillo said in a statement that Berlusconi had been undergoing long-term tests at the hospital.
Berlusconi’s spokesman, who decided not to run for president before a parliamentary vote on Monday, did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
Zangrillo said Berlusconi was admitted to San Raffaele Hospital on Sunday after announcing his decision to cancel his presidential candidacy.
Two sources close to the matter told Reuters that he had been in hospital since Thursday.
The Italian right-wing coalition asked Berlusconi to submit, but any bid he made was unlikely to succeed, as he struggled to gather the necessary support among more than 1,000 lawmakers and regional representatives.
