The Turkish president has promised to rescue the Marmara Sea from a “sea beak” that worries marine biologists and environmentalists.
A huge mass of sea urchins – a thick, muddy substance composed of compounds released by marine organisms – has flourished in the Turkish Marmara, as well as the adjacent Black and Aegean Seas.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that untreated waste is dumped into the Marmara Sea and that climate change has caused the sea floor to flourish.
Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey with a population of about 16 million, has five other provinces, factories and industrial sites bordering the sea.
The seabed has reached unprecedented levels this year in Turkey. It is visible above the water like a sticky gray sheet on the edges of Istanbul and the surrounding provinces. Underwater videos showed the stifling coral covered.
Marine experts say human waste and industrial pollution are drowning the Turkish seas.
They say that rising water temperatures as a result of climate change are contributing to the problem.
