Hundreds of migrants remain on the border between Poland and Belarus as temperatures drop

WARSAW (Reuters) – Hundreds of migrants camped near Belarus’s border with Poland in freezing temperatures on Tuesday night when the Polish prime minister visited the border and officials warned tensions could escalate in the coming days.

Poland has accused Belarus of wanting to spark a major confrontation by encouraging migrants to move to Poland and the European Union.

Video clips showed hundreds of migrants walking towards the Polish border near the village of Kuznica, and some were trying to break a barrier using lacquers and other tools.

Images released by Polish police on Tuesday showed migrants ’tents and camps on the side of the Belarusian wire fence.

The Polish Border Guard told Reuters that about 800 people were encamped on the side of the Belarusian fence, part of a group of up to 4,000 migrants there and in the surrounding forests.

A spokesman for Poland’s special services said it was estimated that there could be as many as 12,000 migrants in Belarus.

Polish authorities closed the official border crossing with GMT Belarus on Tuesday at 06:00, near the place where thousands of immigrants tried to advance on the eve.

Poland said it had deployed more soldiers, border guards and police, while Lithuania said it could impose a state of emergency on the Belarusian border.

Polish police said on Twitter (NYSE 🙂 that Tuesday night was a quiet night, even though a stone was thrown at a police car after Monday’s clashes.

A Polish official said tensions could escalate in the coming days and additional international aid could be accepted if that were the case.

Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski, speaking with private Radio Zet, confirmed that for the time being Poland does not need additional support from the EU border guard Frontex.

EU ambassadors will gather at the United Nations on Tuesday to discuss the tension, the PAP news agency told the Polish ambassador.

The Belarusian state news agency Belta told the interior minister that no migrants had broken the law.
