Five Indian players, including skipper Yash Dhull, were left out of the final league match against Uganda on Friday after testing positive for the U-19 World Cup at COVID-19 in the final RT-PCR tests.

Of the six players who were isolated before the match against Ireland on Wednesday, only the full player Vasu Vats gave a negative, an ICC source told PTI.

The team, which has already qualified for the quarter-finals, will play against Uganda on Saturday in Trinidad, Tarouban, in the final match of Group B.

Skipper Dhull, Aaradhya Yadav and Shaik Rasheed, who tested positive for the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), gave positive reports in the RT-PCR test along with Manav Parakh, which was negative for the RAT.

Sidharth Yadav tested positive for RT-PCR before the Irish match.

“One of the pitfalls of this unfortunate situation is that the 11 who played against Ireland have given a negative,” the ICC source said.

Among those infected, Dhull has the worst symptoms, but he, along with other players, “should be fine” before the Jan. 29 quarterfinals if he is to finish first in Group B.

India got a big win to qualify Ireland for the play-offs after they almost managed to form a team as a result of their camp’s COVID appearance.

All infected players must undergo five days of isolation according to tournament protocols and may only join the team after three negative tests during that period.

After winning the Asian Cup in the Basque Country, the Indian national team went to the Caribbean via Amsterdam. A support staff member, who is now well, tested positive after arriving in Guyana during a severe quarantine after being caught in the infection and the players are believed to have contracted the virus.

The whole team underwent a severe five-day quarantine on arrival in Guyana and underwent three RTPCR tests during that period. However, since the test report lasted 48 hours, the third test report was only made available on the seventh day.

“During that time the players got confused with the coach and it seems that this could be the source of the team’s appearance,” the source added.

It is also known that the bio-bubble of the tournament could be more severe for the team that is not assigned huge floors in the hotel, as it was the Asian Cup in the Basque Country.

However, despite the tight bubble in Dubai, the virus managed to get into the environment and the league match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had to be canceled after the two officials who took part in the game tested positive.
