The UK’s permanent representative to the United Nations has warned that famine is near in the Tigray region of Ethiopia and in the north of the country.
UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward told new reporters in New York on Tuesday that there is a risk of killing hundreds of thousands of people or more. He noted that the economy has been destroyed along with crops and farms.
“It is clear that food, agricultural tools and livestock are being destroyed. And as a result, 350,000 people in Tigray are starving on a scale not seen since hunger in Somalia“Woodward said.
“We would welcome a discussion that will explore support for African-led solutions and work with regional initiatives to end this crisis.”
The UK government ordered an additional £ 16.7 million ($ 23.6 million) for Ethiopia.
“Man-made hunger”
No one knows how many thousands of civilians or fighters have been killed since the months of political tensions between the government of Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed and the Tigray leaders who dominated the Ethiopian government erupted last November.
Eritrea, a longtime enemy of Tigray, joined the conflict in the Ethiopian neighborhood.
“While the violence continues, the people of Tigray are not only condemned to desperate hunger this year, they are also condemned next year. The lives of millions of people are in balance.
“The solution is clear: a ceasefire, humanitarian access and political dialogue … Without a ceasefire, it can turn into a man-made hunger,” Woodward warned.
