Ajaz Patel is excited to return to his native New Zealand, but as a cricketer, he is well aware of the challenges a spinner has to face in his backyard against India.
Patel, a left arm spinner, was born in Mumbai but moved to New Zealand when he was eight years old.
The 33-year-old, who has not played bowling in the first division since June, wants to play a decisive part in the series of two Tests against India that will start on Thursday in Kampur.
“Now I’ve been to some places in India that I haven’t really seen. India has been very beautiful, but it’s a bit of a pity that we can’t really go out and live in India, but that’s the nature of the world. The moment.
“India is about the hustle and bustle. There’s a bit of excitement about India. I always think of it as partly organized chaos, something that makes it really special,” he said.

Speaking about the challenges of bowling in India, Patel said: “We know what India has to offer in terms of spin bowling, but at the same time we also know the challenges facing India at home.
“It’s a challenge as a spinner, but it’s something I’m excited about and moving forward, so I’m excited.” Patel, who has so far taken 26 wickets in nine Tests for New Zealand, believes the SG red cherry poses a variety of challenges for foreign bowlers.
“The SG ball is definitely different, quite similar to the Duke’s. It’s a pretty tough ball, and I actually find it pretty nice to reach. But it also offers different challenges, a slightly different bowling style,” he said.

“It’s been pretty good (preparation). We’ve moved a lot, but at the same time we have a lot of time to train and get used to the conditions. Luckily we’ve worked hard enough.” It is likely that off-spinner Patel and Will Somerville will lead the New Zealand spin department in the first test in India, where the kiwis have not tested victory since 1988.
“We feed each other pretty well, it offers that height and bounce, while I offer that low slip,” Patel said of his partnership with Sommerville as they plan to make a fourth appearance together.

“They rotate their left arm and rotate them outside their right arm in different ways, so it’s always nice to play together.
“You grow up being in a team of other spinners and playing together, just like you can communicate and have a good sense of what’s going on in the middle,” he said.
“They’ll be there when he’s attacking or what I’m attacking, so now we understand very well. We’ve played a few games together, so it’s exciting to be able to get out on the street and do it again.”
