Tunisia’s Ennahdha says security forces have arrested a high-ranking party official and denounced it as an illegal attempt to silence the country’s political opposition.
In a Facebook post on Friday, the party with the most suspended seats in Tunisia’s parliament said street-wearing agents had taken Noureddine Bhairi and her brother-in-law, lawyer Said al-Akrami, to an unknown destination.
“The Ennahdha movement strongly denounces this dangerous precedent, which heralds that the country will enter the tunnel of tyranny and turn off political opposition outside the realm of the law,” the statement said.
President Kais Saied removed parliament he assumed governmental powers in late July, in a move, opponents marked a coup.
Since Saied’s involvement, several politicians and top businessmen have been arrested or prosecuted, often in the midst of corruption or defamation cases.

In a statement to Al Jazeera, Marzouki ruled that the verdict was illegal, saying it was “given by an illegitimate president who revoked the constitution.”
Human rights groups have criticized some arrests and the use of military courts to try such cases.
Saied has denied allegations of coup d’etat and he promised to defend his rights and freedoms He won the 2011 Tunisian revolution, which started democracy and sparked Arab Spring uprisings across the region.
However, the former professor of Constitutional Law has given up his 2014 democratic constitution and empowered himself to govern by decree during a transition period that will offer a new constitution to a public referendum.
Ennahdha was banned before the revolution, but then consistently influenced the party and became a member of successive coalition governments.
The support of the party recently lower as a result of economic stagnation and the paralysis of its political system.
