Indian police have blamed Amazon officials for an alleged case of marijuana smuggling by Reuters

LUCKNOW, India (Reuters) – Indian police on Saturday said they reported top officials from a local unit on Amazon.com (NASDAQ:) under drug laws in a marijuana smuggling case through an online retailer.

State Police said in a statement that the chief executive officer of Amazon India was being appointed as an accused under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act as the company clarified the disputes over the differences in the answers given to police questions and incidents.

Police did not report how many executives were indicted.

Police, who had previously called and spoken to the Amazon executive in the case, estimate that about $ 1,000 kg of marijuana was sold for about $ 148,000 through Amazon.

Amazon said in a statement that it does not support the listing and sale of legally banned products, and added that it takes drastic measures against sellers in the event of any violation.

“We were notified of the problem and we are currently investigating,” Amazon said of the alleged marijuana smuggling.

Indian authorities have stepped up efforts to crack down on illegal drugs in recent years. Many of India’s most famous actors and TV characters have been scrutinized by narcotics officials since last year.
