U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has confirmed that he has COVID-19 because the highly infectious variant of Omicron is exacerbating cases in the United States.

Austin’s symptoms were “mild” and he will face quarantine in the next five days, the Pentagon chief said in a statement.

Austin said he was fully vaccinated and promoted, which “made the infection much milder than it would otherwise have been.”

“Vaccines work and will continue to be a military medical condition for our staff,” Austin said. “I continue to encourage everyone who is eligible to receive a booster shot to join.”

Austin said his last contact with President Joe Biden was on Dec. 21, more than a week before symptoms began, and that morning he tested negative for the virus.

He will maintain all authority and attend key meetings and discussions almost “as much as possible,” the statement said.

The Pentagon tightened restrictions on its headquarters last week due to concerns over Omicron, and the U.S. military has imposed a COVID-19 vaccine order.

Austin is a senior U.S. official who has tested positive for the virus.

Several members of Congress recently reported being diagnosed with the virus, while in October, Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Press Secretary Jen Psaki Biden confirmed that they had COVID-19.
