Joe Root must step down as captain of England after his team’s surrender in Melbourne after Australia secured the Ashes, former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott said on Tuesday.

“If he really believes what he’s saying, maybe it’s time to give up the captaincy of the English cricket team. The facts look us in the face, except that Joe doesn’t want to see him. England can’t beat him. It’s our normal bowling.”
The boycott said many of Root’s decisions were wrong, such as playing a first on the Gabbera seamer pitch with James Anderson and Stuart Broad aside, with more than 1,100 test wickets between them.

“It’s the dream of every cricketer to be the captain of England and Joe has had 59 test matches in this set of players to shape and seal his dominance. He has played 13 tests against Australia with two wins and nine losses,” Boycott said.
“No one would want to give up the captaincy, but it’s not about Joe, it’s about the boys doing better.”
