In an interview with Al Jazeera, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Iran wants guarantees that sanctions will not be re-imposed.
Iran’s foreign minister has said that a deal could be reached with the world’s powers over his nuclear deal if the Western parties have the will and intention to do so.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said an agreement could be reached if all sanctions are lifted.
The eighth round of negotiations aimed at restoring Iran’s 2015 nuclear treaty is underway in Vienna, where Iran is still seeking guarantees to suspend US sanctions.
Talks on the so-called Integrated Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) are being held between Iran and the world powers that are signatories to the agreement. The United States, which was left out of the deal in 2018, is indirectly involved in the talks.
The JCPOA has eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program. But after the US withdrew, Iran abandoned some tapes and is now using advanced centrifuges to enrich uranium to 60 percent.
After leaving, the United States imposed severe sanctions on Iran.
Tehran is now calling for the complete abolition of US sanctions, as well as ensuring that the US does not withdraw from the agreement, and for a period of time to ensure that sanctions are effectively lifted.
“The removal of sanctions means the removal of all forms of sanctions under the nuclear deal, and the sanctions that Trump re-imposed are inconsistent with the terms of the deal,” Amir-Abdollahian told Al Jazeera.
“We demand guarantees that there will be no new penalties and no re-punishment after they have been removed under any pretext,” he added.
An Iranian official said the “most practical model” for this would be for Iran to export oil and generate revenue through the country’s banking system.
“There is an informal and indirect exchange of messages with Americans in Vienna; we hear good words from that delegation, but what is important to us is to see practical and serious American actions,” Amir-Abdollahian said.
Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari Vienna reported that Amir-Abdollahian seemed “quite optimistic”.
“The technical and logistical issues on the agenda have been resolved,” Jabbari said.
“The foreign minister was very specific about Iran’s position – he gave very good examples of what they are looking for,” he added.
