Tehran has lost the right to vote at the UN for the second year in a row because of obstacles to payment due to US sanctions.

According to the UN Charter, if the delay of a member country exceeds or exceeds the amount of dues it had to pay in the previous two years, its voting rights are suspended until payment is made. The minimum amount Iran has to pay to reclaim its rights is now at least $ 18 million.
Iran also lost the right to vote last year when U.S. sanctions prevented it from acquiring a frozen $ 1 billion abroad.
After months of negotiations, the U.S. Treasury eventually granted access to a small portion of the $ 7 billion Iran blocked in South Korea to pay the minimum fees. This allowed Iran to regain its vote in June for the election of new members of the Security Council.
U.S. sanctions have been unilaterally imposed since 2018, when President Donald Trump withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. This landmark agreement led to the removal of sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program instead of its limits.
The West and its allies in the region, Israel in particular, have accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons, an accusation that Tehran has repeatedly denied. He stressed that his nuclear program is completely peaceful.
Negotiations are underway to reinstate the Vienna deal, and Tehran hopes to help lift sanctions. U.S. President Joe Biden has promised to restore the deal, but talks so far have been slow between the war of words between the two opponents.
