Tehran, Iran – Army commanders of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) have seized a foreign oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, accused of diesel smuggling.

Colonel Ahmad Hajian, commander of the Naval Type 412 Zulfiqar in southern Parsian county in the province of Hormozgan, told the state announcer’s website on Saturday that the ship was illegally transporting 150,000 liters (32,995 liters) of diesel. .

“Through intelligence monitoring and in a coordinated operation, our navy managed to hijack a foreign ship that had 11 crew members in the waters of our country,” he said.

The commander added that the crew members had been handed over to the local court for processing, but did not name the vessel, its nationality or the nationality of the crew. It is also unclear when the incident occurred.

Hajian promised that he would act “decisively” against the attempt to smuggle fuel from the sea in favor of the Iranian economy.

The Fars news website, which has close links to the IRGC, released a dramatic video showing several ships approaching the seized vessel. Then the naval guards are shown boarding the ship, which is empty.

The event comes after Iran they seized a Vietnamese-flagged ship He called the Sothys in the Omani Sea earlier this month after a clash with the U.S. Navy and kept his cargo.

The IRGC said the U.S. was using it to “steal” Iranian oil, the exports of which have been banned since 2018 after unilateral sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump on Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The incident occurred and the ship was released a few days later.

The U.S. responded to the incident in Iran, saying it was only there to “control” the situation.

The signatories to the nuclear deal will return to Vienna in November to resume talks aimed at lifting US sanctions and returning Iran to full compliance with the terms of the agreement.
