There, armed groups continue to wage war, despite years of French military operations.
There is anger in West Africa over France over protesters blaming relations between the French armed forces and their African allies.
Two people were killed and others injured last month in Niger when protesters tried to block a military supply of more than 100 vehicles bound for Mali.
Protest organizers have complained that local forces are under-resourced and that they are suffering disproportionate losses compared to their French allies in frequent attacks by armed groups.
Demonstrators say these groups, often linked to the ISIL (ISIS) group and al-Qaeda, have continued to work in French military operations over the years.
