Israel says the payments encourage “terrorism” while Palestinians provide vital support to the families of the poor.
Israel controls the Palestinian population register, and over the years its policies have left about tens of thousands of Palestinians without legal status, severely restricting their freedom of movement, even in the occupied territories. Israel granted legal status to about 4,000 Palestinians in October.
Naftali Bennett is the Prime Minister of Israel Against Palestinian statute. His government has shown no interest in stimulating peace talks, but has said it wants to reduce tensions by improving living conditions in the West Bank.
