TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan will provide more than $ 2.8 billion in aid to combat the malnutrition that has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic over the next three years, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at an online summit on food growth on Tuesday.

The event, organized by Japan and attended by more than 80 countries and agencies, saw the pandemic worsen hunger and malnutrition worldwide and make food systems increasingly vulnerable to climate change.

“As a result of the coronavirus, the number of children suffering from severe malnutrition has increased by 13.6 million … Now is the time to take action,” Kishida said.

Japan expects to deliver 10 million doses of coronavirus vaccine to African countries, where vaccine rates remain low, Kishida said.

“Japan will work hard to address the issue of food to help the future of humanity. The important thing, to begin with, is to overcome the coronavirus,” he said.
