England’s Jos Buttler has a broken finger and will return home to finish the difficult Ashes lap for a 57-Test wicketkeeper bat.
The England team management said it saw the visiting team after the disastrous end of the fourth test hold on to the tie Buttler said on Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground that he has a “broken left index finger” and will return home on Monday for further assessment and treatment.
“It’s a pretty serious injury and being able to get in and out from the moment he took that blow shows how much he cares,” said captain Joe Root after the fourth Test. “For him it shows how much it means to play in this test team and how much it means to play in England.”

Buttler was unable to take his gloves off, and his obvious replacement, Jonny Bairstow, was also disturbed, injuring his thumb while scoring a goal in England’s first inning a century ago, which meant Ollie Pope joined the visiting team as a substitute.
Pope lost his batting order against Bairstow and was not in the starting lineup in the fourth round.
The England team said Bairstow would travel to Hobart for the fifth Test, which starts on Friday, and would be assessed for a thumb injury a week later.
England have also called up wicketkeeper Sam Billings as a limited pass specialist join the group as a cover For Bairstow and Buttler.
