Judge rejects agreement to protect Purdue’s Sackler family from opioid claims

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A federal judge has struck a deal that would protect the Sackler family from future opioid lawsuits, the Packue Pharma-owned Sackler family from future lawsuits, thwarting the company’s plan to reorganize bankruptcy court.
U.S. District Court Judge Colleen McMahon of Manhattan said in a ruling Thursday that the bankruptcy court had no legal authority to release the family from liability.
Purdue and Sacklers’ attorneys could not be reached immediately for comment on Thursday evening.
The company has accused patients of pushing large amounts of its OxyContin pain medication while underestimating the potential for addiction and abuse, which it has denied. He filed for bankruptcy in 2019 in the face of numerous drug lawsuits.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain approved a reorganization plan in September that included Sacklers paying $ 4.5 billion and settling lawsuits against the company that would be released from future liability.
McMahon, however, said the bankruptcy law did not allow such a release because the Sacklers did not file for bankruptcy.
