Langer has resigned as coach of Australia

Justin Langer resigned as coach of Australia on Saturday, just weeks after England beat Ashes 4-0 in the series, saying Cricket Australia had refused a short-term extension of their contract.

Langer’s departure came on Friday after a contract dispute with Cricket Australia, with his current deal expiring in June.

Australia also won last year’s Twenty20 World Cup for the first time under the leadership of Langer, but the players have been disappointed with his coaching style.

Langer reportedly reacted angrily at his last meeting with Cricket Australia about his contract and asked him to reapply for the role.

His management company, Dynamic Sports & Entertainment Group (DSEG), said his resignation was immediately enforced.

“DSEG has confirmed that our client Justin Langer has resigned this morning as coach of the Australian cricket team,” the company said.

Cricket Australia said in a statement that Lang had been offered an extension on Friday.

“Justin was offered a short-term extension on his current contract, and unfortunately decided not to accept it,” he said, adding that Andrew McDonald would serve as interim coach for a test tour of Pakistan in a few weeks.

“The contract extension offered to Justin was the result of an in-depth review process that assessed many factors, including the team’s future requirements and the extensive schedule ahead.

“At the end of this year he included the possibility of defending the Australian T20 World Cup title. Justin informed the CA this morning that he did not accept the offer and would resign immediately.”

Langer took over as coach in South Africa in 2018 as a result of the ball handling scandal and Australian general manager Nick Hockley Cricket said he was “outstanding” in that role.

“He has regained confidence in the team and his legacy is assured,” he said.

Although Australia was successful, it has been speculated in recent months that Langer did not have the full support of the locker room.

The senior player and head of Cricket Australia met last year amid reports that Langer’s lively coaching style was rubbing the player in the wrong direction.

Australian Test captain Pat Cummins recently praised Langer for his “tremendous” work, but said it was fair for Cricket Australia to carry out an evaluation process before taking a decision to renew his contract.

Former captain Ricky Ponting was strict as the government team handled the matter.

“It’s a sad day for Australian cricket,” he told ABC Radio on Saturday.

“Reading the tea leaves, it seems, as he would say, to a very small team in the game team … that he didn’t like the way he did it.

“And it’s been enough to force his life, heart and soul into Australian cricket and force a man who I think has done a tremendous job to turn culture around and see the Australian cricket team as seen in the last three. Four years … out of his dream job.”

Langer, who won 105 test caps, said last month that he was proud of how the team performed.

“What’s happening from here on out is that we can all be incredibly proud of this little time,” he told SEN Radio in Australia.

“We had two missions: (Twenty20) to win the World Cup and to win the Ashes.

Langer has resigned and his England member Chris Silverwood has resigned.
