The Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) World Championship It’s a global competition that tests students ’design skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign. Presented Certiport, students are invited to represent their countries at the World Championships.
Repeated for the 8th year in a row, the 2021 competition attracted more than 65,000 competitors from 65 countries to demonstrate their design skills. Out of the group of competitors, a 23-year-old Malaysian took first place and received a prize of $ 7,000.
Meet Danny Tse Wei Chun
He is currently the coordinating producer Omens Animation Studios, Danny Alor was born in Setar, Kedah. In an interview with the Vulcan Post, he shared that he had acquired his design skills when he joined Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in his founding program.
Taking a degree in Digital Animation, he delved into the areas of Photoshop and developed animation skills, including character design and illustration.
In her 2nd year of college, Danny became more active and joined the school’s writing team for events. There, he had greater exposure to creating posters.
“This sparked my interest because I was excited to see the ability of visual design to get someone’s attention,” Danny told us. However, designing posters is not necessarily where his main interest is, but rather in illustration.
If the opportunity arises, Danny hopes to be a great illustrator in the future.
Champion during the stages
Danny studied at the hands of a UTAR professor before graduating from the ACA design competition in August 2021. He took the opportunity to test his skills in the first national version of the competition, the ACA Championship Malaysia 2021.
Organizer This, a well-known local computer provider, the national competition reduces the top 30 students to sit in an 8-hour Live Test without including internet references for design inspiration. Esther told the Vulcan Post that Malaysia is the only country that conducts this Live Test to simulate real competition, and that only 3 winners can come out. Then these 3 will be prepared for the world stage.
This year, Malaysia has managed to produce 2 design students who have reached the Top 5 at the 2021 ACA World Championships. With Danny in 1st place, Sze Ting Teo Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) finished in 5th place.
In the global competition, students were given 6 hours to design a project Unlimited solutions, A US-based bionics manufacturer, selected as this year’s non-profit customer. And if you’ve ever used Adobe Creative Cloud software, you’ll know that a lot can go wrong when you’re looking for a client.
It can fail a lot in 6 hours
Entering the competition without prior knowledge of Limbitless Solutions, they only gave Danny the customer’s logo, some of his illustrations. Bionic child comic book characters, and their title. The rest had to be designed from scratch with the creative software provided through the competition’s virtual computer, where it went deep into the water.
Danny shared that he and most of the participants needed more than an hour to log in to the virtual computer at the start of the 6-hour competition. Also, all participants were given an exclusive login link, but Danny and another participant from Malaysia were given the same, and it took them a while to realize this.
To solve the problem that was beyond the ability of the designers, they had to call the technical team of the competition.
In addition, Danny, one of the most proficient in Adobe Photoshop, reported that the Pen tool in virtual computer software was malfunctioning.
“This had an impact on my performance in the competition [the Pen tool] it’s an important feature to create good illustrations in Adobe Photoshop, ”said Danny, who had to draw attention from the feeling of momentary failure to focus on his second force, Adobe Illustrator.
But when he thought he was out of the woods, he started delaying the software when the effects were applied. Slowing down after each new edition, Danny decided to export each layer from Adobe Illustrator and organize it in Adobe Photoshop.
Whether intentional or not, Danny’s quick thinking and creative set of problem-solving skills suggest a great ability to use these.
We don’t know if the judges were aware of his design process. However, Danny still won a design that produced visual appeal, the ability to meet customer requirements, brand aesthetics, and the use of Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
Now with a total of $ 7,000, Danny wants to use the prize fund to care for his family and teachers to thank them for their support. He will then save the rest for his future to use as an expense to live in the US, where he hopes to work as an illustrator.
