Malaysian dating application with genetic matching services – Wired PR Lifestyle Story

In my social circles, some of the most common dating apps used are Tinder, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Bumble, all US-based companies. I personally found my match (3 years and going strong) through Tinder.

Singapore-based matching service MatchMde, is trying to track down another strategy. Among other things, it says it offers an AI dating coach to help users secure dates.

But it wasn’t his AI function that caught my eye, it was his recent collaboration Malaysian Genomics Resource Center (MGRC) to release an add-on and selection service called Gene Match for $ 245 (about RM1K).

Basically, The Gene Match is a biocompatibility linking service that is not a new concept in the world, but a newer one in the SEA.

Finding your genetic counterpart

It sounds pretty science fiction, and there’s even a Netflix series called The One based on the concept. So we had to ask the team, what were they thinking?

“MatchMde’s approach has always been to help our users make meaningful connections by leveraging science and technology,” Fabian Fook, CEO of MatchMde, said in our interview. “Our conversation with MGRC began with the idea and opportunity to match biocompatibility.”

Further research and research has shown that up to 40% of physical attraction can only be determined by human genes, according to Fabian.

Although we were unable to obtain a dialogue with the MGRC, it appears that the Bursa company was also exploring new areas for expansion, in addition to the more common health and agriculture sectors.

Having been in the genome sequencing and analysis business since 2004, its CEO Sasha Nordin said in a press release that the company has the ability to expand its offering to other new areas.

“[This] genomic collaboration is a testament to the possibilities of innovating and applying science and technology to other new applications, ”Sasha said.

Focusing on 4 areas of biocompatibility

Most of the genetic testing that has been done lately takes DNA samples through saliva, and the same goes for The Gene Match.

When the sample is returned to MatchMde, the MGRC will be processed in a newly expanded lab. Samples must take at least 18 business days for processing users to check the My DNA section of the MatchMde application to update their status.

According to the theory of biocompatibility, the greater the difference in genetic characteristics between 2 people, the more compatible they are.

Gene Match examines 4 crucial areas for determining interpersonal compatibility. “In plain language, it helps determine if there is a breach of agreement,” Fabian said.

First, they examine the level of self-attraction. This will allow users to find out if they have a high level of attraction with their game, and vice versa, based on genetic profiles.

The second is Satisfaction of Intimacy, where users find ways to know their preferences and response to physical, emotional, intellectual, and psychological intimacy, and ways to find a peer who can meet their needs.

The third is Desire for Children. This refers to the compatibility they want to have with their children, which can create or break a relationship.

Finally, the satisfaction of the Cooperation. There, such as the individuality of the user as a person, the tendency to positive emotions and moods, and the nature of his or her potential peer can decide whether the two can be happy together.

But the question is, will it really help users find “one”? What happens if a person has more than one biocompatible match that checks all the boxes?

Fabian clarified that it is important to understand that there are different matching algorithms within the MatchMde platform. Gene Match is an additional add-on to identify a potential connection that provides another layer of filtering, so to speak.

“As with the main merging algorithm, the user can decide whether they want to match the recommended one,” he explains.

He also addressed the fact that there are many factors that affect or determine the overall compatibility of 2 people. Even within these four features, different users have different preferences and will decide to continue the game.

Ultimately, the purpose of MatchMde is to provide users with information that is not normally available to them to make an informed decision about a match.

Before people pay, the app needs to be improved

MatchMde itself is free and you can certainly find matches without paying for concealment. That being said, however, it seems that many of the appealing features like Gene Match that increase your chances of matching your quality are locked behind a pay wall.

From my point of view, there are 2 reasons to pay for the services of a dating app: 1) they are desperate for a match, or 2) they like the free features enough and have seen the results, but would like even better ones.

To properly capture the second market, MatchMd still has room for improvement. When you download the app and go through its offerings, it doesn’t seem to have much to boast about its clean interface and verification process to reduce cat fishing.

However, despite being clean, I noticed that the interface was a minor flaw. For example, some features were slow to load or respond to my touch, and sometimes there were UI elements that blocked other details.

Also, even though the app verifies you through a selfie, I’ve noticed some profiles with cartoon or blackened images though, so the team will have to tighten this process a lot more if they really want to avoid cat fishing.

What drives the usability of a dating app is also its set of candidates, its user base. For the most part, I saw that there weren’t many potential options available compared to my experience with other established dating apps.

In addition, my colleague also recommended several people to me, even though they are more than 30 km away. I would conclude from this that since the set of candidates is still limited, the app shows you people from all over the place to maximize your chances of matching.

Although there are reviews of the app on the App Store and Google Play, they say that its AI service has helped to help in the conversation in the app.

MatchMde’s overall concept is certainly intriguing and new to Malaysia, but to fully launch The Gene Match, the team would need to refine its basic dating application services.

On the plus side, if you manage to find a match on MatchMde, at least the app offers location recommendations as a date spot.
