Crypto can come in many forms, including a photo, painting, pixel art, video clip, 3D models, and even a tweet. What distinguishes crypto-art or NFT from traditional form or digital art is that they are made in a blockchain.
Minting involves converting a digital file into a blockchain asset, thus creating an NFT.
In doing so, there are expensive “gas quotas,” which are the transaction fees that users pay to miners in a blockchain to block their transactions.
We call it expensive because fees vary depending on supply and demand and are done in cryptocurrency. Therefore, artists who are new to the field of cryptography and NFT may not have the resources or knowledge to use them.
How can a Malaysian artist start selling his work on the blockchain? Where do they start?

Support group for NFT artists
Launched in March 2021, MalaysiaNFT was started by Munira Hamzah, who coined the name. Later, Layla, Gray and Alex, a 3D artist and photographer, came together to launch the community.
Munira walked the NFT space ahead of most of his other teammates. He is the crypto artist behind it Mumu The Stan, where one of his pixel GIF artwork surprised a teammate at Linkin Park and then bought that NFT for equivalent cryptography. RM7,400.
MalaysiaNFT is simply a non-profit group that helps Malaysian artists enter the NFT world. Through this group, the goal is to help artists grow their NFT careers without the hassle of having cryptocurrencies before they can charge for their work.
The group does this by providing educational materials, fundraising funds and peer support to empower artists while elevating Malaysian art on the global stage. Alex and Munira believe that this could allow crypto artists to start even though they lack the financial capacity.
“There was a lack of community in the local NFT scene. That’s why we created one Discord group to provide the necessary materials for events and NFTs to help the community support, guide and support each other, ”they told the Vulcan Post.
There, artists can find the set of materials needed to understand the issues, including what NFTs are, the concept of decentralization and blockchain, and what platforms are available.

Funding for artists
As mentioned earlier, MalaysiaNFT also provides funding and support to artists for their work.
To verify applications, an artist should send a link to any MalaysiaNFT social network or portfolio to let the community know that he or she is an artist who has never done so. This is because funding is only offered to first-time entrants.
“We offer 0.33 Tezos (at the time of writing about RM6) for each artist to start making on the Tezos platform,” the group explained.
Tezos It is a decentralized open source blockchain that can execute peer-to-peer transactions and serves as a platform for the deployment of smart contracts. Tezos is a cryptocurrency for blockchain tez with the symbol XTZ.
Funding is obtained through donations to MalaysiaNFT, where most transactions are done through cryptography. The advantage of this is that everything is recorded in the blockchain, and is available to anyone to view transactions.
This provides a level of transparency that is not seen in the traditional fiat world, according to the group.
But even one of the biggest challenges the group faced when it started its community was the difficulty of seeking funding, as MalaysiaNFT was not registered as a business or non-profit organization.
This created a challenge for them as Crypto ArtWeek planned to organize Asia: Malaysia (CAWA Malaysia), but the team soon found a way out.
“We overcame this problem by selling NFTs and we raised about 200 Tezo by auctioning funds to raise funds,” they said. 200 Tezos is equivalent to about RM4,000 at the time of writing.
Bringing artists to the regional stage
CAWA Malaysia Crypto ArtWeek Asia (CAWA) is a satellite event held in July 2021 that highlighted the best of Asian crypto art throughout the week.
MalaysiaNFT had a virtual gallery featuring Malaysian artists, ranging from copyright law to CleanNFT (a move to use less energy and move to greener NFT activities). Red Hong Yi and Munira himself, along with blockchain developers, also had a roundtable discussion.
Asked how MalaysiaNFT got involved, the team shared that it was looking for anyone who was willing to help in response to an open call from the main CAWA team.
To date, MalaysiaNFT’s website only provides information about CAWA, which is updating the team. Therefore, the main platform for showcasing local talent in Malaysia will be focused on social media for the time being.

Since the founding of the MalaysiaNFT community, the group has noticed a rapid growth of Malaysian artists performing NFTs. The group noted that what started out as a few has now become tens of thousands.

“NoFutur3_ Pentas users raised around RM80,000 in BNB (Binance coin) through donations from the Pentas NFT community,” they said. Stage Binance is a Malaysian blockchain NFT platform.
Meanwhile, MalaysiaNFT raised RM14,752 in Tezos currencies. As of December 21, they were able to collectively collect about RM130,000 in various cryptocurrencies.
In the near future, MalaysiaNFT aims to create a more attractive community and educate people more about blockchain technology and decentralization. This is because they noticed that they had jumped into the NFT ship without knowing much.
Therefore, through more meetings, they will be able to better engage the community and provide personal guidance.

To be honest, I needed a lot of research on cryptography and NFT to understand the basics. Before that, I was confused and struggled to pick up on the concept.

Thus, MalaysiaNFT is worth the effort of the group to provide a community where artists can receive funding to learn about the concepts and do their work. It will take more time to fully form the community, but it is already a good place to start. After all, it could be said that the adoption of Malaysian NFT is still in its infancy.
