BAMAKO (Reuters) – Mali’s ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been killed, his former justice minister and former adviser told Reuters on Sunday. He was 76 years old.

The cause of death was still unclear.

Keita, known as IBK, ruled the West African country from September 2013 to August 2020, a violent Islamist uprising that took over a vast area in the center and north, helping to erode its popularity.

He was ousted in a military coup after months of protests against the government.

A former adviser said he died at home in the capital Bamako.
