The football club says 20-year-old Mason Greenwood “will not return to training or play a game until it is announced”.

Manchester United have sacked footballer Mason Greenwood after a move in which he accused a 20-year-old player of assaulting a woman on the network.

The allegations against Greenwood, including a video, photos and a voice note, were posted on Instagram on Sunday morning and then deleted.

Police in Greater Manchester said a man had been arrested on charges of rape and assault and was being held in custody for questioning after images and videos on social media were posted by a woman reporting physical violence.

According to police practice, the suspect was not named.

“Police in Greater Manchester have released images released on social media this morning and videos posted by a woman alleging physical violence,” she said in a statement.

“An investigation has been launched and after the investigation, we can confirm that a 20-year-old man has been arrested on charges of rape and assault,” the statement said.

Greenwood has six goals and two assists in 24 games this season in all of United’s competition.
