Mikaela Mayer has big plans, plans that include becoming undisputed super featherweight champion and moving up in weight to chase down big names like Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano at lightweight. First, however, Mayer needs to get past Jennifer Han in a defense of her WBO and IBF titles on Saturday night (10 pm ET, ESPN).
Judging by the odds for the fight, the expectation is that Mayer manages to handle Han with ease. Han had a lengthy run as IBF champion at featherweight before a trip up to lightweight to get routed by Taylor in a bout with Taylor’s four world championships on the line.
Han got the call to face Mayer because the other two women who hold titles at 130 pounds, WBC champ Alycia Baumgardner and WBA champ Hyun Mi Choi, have plans to face each other down the road. Those plans have left Mayer frustrated and led to a war of words with Baumgardner.
With the chance of unifying all four titles at super featherweight off the table for the foreseeable future, Mayer has shifted her focus to the April 30 fight between Taylor and Serrano, which is arguably the biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing.
Mayer says she’ll be ringside for the fight and that she’s ready to move up in weight and face the winner in a bid to become a four-belt champion at 135 pounds.
“It’s a win-win situation for me because a fight with Katie Taylor would be phenomenal and a fight with Amanda Serrano would be huge for America. So fighting the winner is my dream,” Mayer told The Guardian. “I’m going to be at my best at lightweight because I’ll be naturally stronger at 135 pounds as I’m walking around at 150 and I’m 5-foot-9. I’m so ready for Taylor or Serrano. “

Prediction
Mayer has more than proven her ability to go through a war and come out of it with her hand raised. That was on display against Maïva Hamadouche in arguably the best fight of 2021. Women’s boxing is going through a massive evolution and Mayer is a part of that while Han is in that group of women who are getting lapped by the new generation.
