Like me shared, this year’s holiday decor set a new personal mark on how I dressed our house. And apparently, I’m not the only one who decided that 2021 was worth an extra time to feel festive. When I shared a survey on Instagram, 49% of you said you planned to put up a Thanksgiving tree this year. Almost half! So one of the things I enjoy most this season is filling my house as well with a holiday spirit, I was so excited to catch the magic and share it with everyone who walks in our door.
This year’s look was inspired by sculptural branches, evergreen and winter branches, which made an important statement in the face of a minimalist background of neutrals. Comfortable fabrics and bright light fires are reminiscent of the Scandinavian concept amusing. So maybe we’ll call this year’s look “Woodland Scandi,” right? Meet the minimalist, the maximalist
My overall strategy was to stick to a minimalist color palette of neutral and natural green tones, but then go a little overboard when using them. nonahi. Create an axis
The centerpiece of this year’s decor is the bold, sculptural greenery created by Gracious Garlands to surround our fireplace. In the weeks leading up to our filming, Elle and I collaborated on a shared Pinterest board that brought together all sorts of unique branches and modern Christmas decorating ideas, and depicted a piece of mantle that focused on these sculptural winter branches. room.

Throughout the year, our living room feels like a beach; in fact, our whole house has a summer atmosphere. To make the space more comfortable and more seasonal, we exchanged a photo of a large-scale ocean that tends to hang over the fireplace instead of a classic mirror. Out of season, I wrap it in brown paper and store it in a closet, and it’s fun to mix it up with this piece that only hangs in our living room every year.
But incorporate the existing decor
I have left the open shelves in our living room shaped as usual; i like how these non-holiday decorations anchor the room and keep it aligned with my personal style. Not doing every inch of space kept the space feeling fresh, instead of looking like Santa’s workshop exploded in our living room.
Put a bow
Textile tape, like the velvet we used to tie our swags, is a simple way to add luxury and sophistication to simple greenery. It also provides the luxury of a holiday, and I’ll save some to cut out the presents we pile up under the tree. One of my favorite modern Christmas decorating ideas is to wrap my gifts in kraft paper, then use textured tape to dress them up.
Give me all the wreaths
Are there too many wreaths on holiday? In my book, the more, the better. Gracious Garlands created excursions that hung on the back doors and crowns on the front doors and windows around the dining room … it was a motif that filled the blow and gave the whole house a good smell.
Instead of starting from scratch, Elle used a crown mold and decorated it with seed pods, eucalyptus, berries and other natural elements. Here’s how he did it:

Deliberately choose a color palette
In previous years, I always thought I should hang all the decorations we have on the tree, but this year I stopped and asked myself: what did I really do. want in the tree? The kitchen is a popular place to decorate for the holidays, so this year we’ve added a sweet and simple hat surround. I love the velvet ribbon that hangs, and this little piece is just all we needed to make this room in the house feel magical.
Embrace Scandi Vibes
Before we could prepare some nice dinners, I covered our dining table with a large linen tablecloth, and then I added simple runners made of evergreen leaves and pomegranates, low enough to interfere with the conversation at dinner time. Many different lighting elements have been incorporated into this year’s holiday decor to create a magical glow in the room, day and night. In addition to the fire I light almost every day, there are candles scattered on the coffee table and bright lights on the Christmas tree and mantle garland. When I curl up at night with a cup and a good book to read in the light of the fire, I really wish this season would last forever.
