E-learning and edutech sites have proliferated as a result of the pandemic, but in 2018, it could be said that Malaysia had no attractive options.

Realizing that there was no one-stop shop for education, Thinesh and Kavi decided to build two products at the same time: an E-Tuition platform for 7-17 year olds, and MindAppz, an online learning marketplace for college students, working professionals, or anyone who wants to improve their skills.

Combined with the company’s 15 years of experience in education and computing, the couple believes they still have what it takes to highlight their solutions in a landscape with similar players today. Re-skills, MyClaaz, and more.

Respond to different interests and learning styles

Looking at MindAppz, I would say that it certainly covers a wider range of topics compared to other edutech sites in Malaysia. For example, you can find common business and personal development topics, as well as music and nature.

Although the home page and category pages appear a little cluttered, there are at least some filters to help determine the topic you want.

Thinesh told the Vulcan Post that he believes each student has their own unique learning needs, so MindAppz uses a different learning methodology.

This means that the market offers live classes, quizzes, interactive practices, video lessons, revision courses, etc., for 360-degree learning, which can help reduce filters.

“The advantage of integrating technology into education is that it allows students to take classes from the best teachers, as well as personalize the way students learn,” Thinesh explained.

And MindAppz is ready to offer this to the best of its ability, and believes that it will continue to stand out from other edutech sites in the market.

Allow students to judge the quality of their learning

Unlike other platforms, however, MindAppz is getting more involved when it comes to analyzing its traders.

Instead, students decide for themselves how much a product (class, course, e-book, etc.) was worth to them through assessment and reviews, and how other students can make the decision.

Today, the market has nearly 2,000 online education products offered by retailers such as UiTM Press, UPSI Press, Drawzania, Prestasi Cemerlang and more.

MindAppz does not charge them any access or configuration fees; It uses a 50-50 revenue sharing strategy for each successful transaction.

According to Thinesh, this ratio gives the merchant a higher return on profit than other marketing channels, where they would receive only 20% of the revenue from sales through designated publishers.

Getting closer to potential marketers was one of MindAppz’s biggest challenges in the early days, as they still didn’t have a brand or user base, Thinesh shared.

But since then, the brand has been recognized by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) and the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), which has helped grow credibility and trust among traders.

And as its merchants grew, so did its user base, and today MindAppz has registered about 180K users, 25K of whom are paid users.

In the last 6 months in particular, Thinesh has stated that E-Tuition has been very well received and believes that this will continue to be a trend even after the pandemic.

Navigating an increasingly competitive landscape

To increase user access, the team has obtained the approval of the Ministry of Education to provide a free E-Tuition test to all Malaysian primary and secondary school students.

“We are focused on urban parents to provide their children with high-quality, innovative content while making learning fun and contextual,” concludes Thinesh. It is in line with its plans to expand the brand nationwide.

I can’t talk about the quality of MindAppz’s offering, but if it’s not the recognition it has received from other Malaysian organizations, it has had an impact on the learning landscape.

The Malaysia Center for Global Innovation and Creativity (MaGIC) MindAppz has also been selected to be part of its GAP Cohort 5 and has pushed for the next phase of growth.

Over the course of three months, Thinesh said they were able to plan and navigate their entrepreneurial journey with valuable insights.

More importantly, it shed more light on what they needed to focus on to better position their startup to attract potential investors.

As mentioned earlier, the e-learning and edutech platform is very competitive today, and to stand out in a site that needs to offer not only quality education, but also innovative learning solutions.

If Thinesh and his team are to further improve their offerings and respond to the right parent market, MindAppz should have consistent growth, and gaining visibility with government support is the smart first step in doing so.
