The military court has found NLD activists Phyo Zeyar Thaw and Kyaw Min Yu guilty of terrorism under the harshest sentences of a year-long coup.
A closed military court in Myanmar has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party and a prominent democracy activist to death.
NLD’s Phyo Zeyar Thaw, who was arrested in November, was sentenced to death for crimes under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Act, a general note said.
Democracy activist Kyaw Min Yu, better known as Ko Jimmy, was given the same punishment, the release added, with photos of the two men.
They were charged with felony criminal mischief, bombing and terrorist offenses, but the details were sketched out due to the shutdown of the proceedings. Min Yu’s wife, Nilar Thein, in October denied allegations against her husband.
Myanmar plunged into crisis when Army leader Min Aung Hlaing removed the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and seized military power on February 1 last year.
The coup sparked mass protests and a civil disobedience movement, and thousands have been arrested by the military in an attempt to break dissent. It is estimated that nearly 1,500 civilians were killed.

Phyo Zeyar Thaw and Kyaw Min Yu have been jailed by previous military regimes and are among the most prominent activists to have received the death penalty since the coup. Myanmar has been without execution for decades.

Phyo Zeyar Thaw, whose real name is Maung Kyaw, was arrested last November in an apartment in Yangon, the country’s largest city, in an apartment for “notification and cooperation of responsible citizens,” the military said.
Known as a pioneer of hip-hop, Phyo Zeyar Thaw was elected to parliament by the country in 2015 on the road to democracy.
He was charged with two guns, ammunition and an M-16 rifle at the time of his arrest, and was accused of orchestrating several attacks on security forces.
Kyaw Min Yu, who starred in the 1988 student uprising in Myanmar, was arrested during a night search in October.
As part of a “88th Generation” movement against former Myanmar military authorities, he was accused of stirring up unrest with social media posts.
Aung San Suu Kyi, 76, is facing numerous charges, including violating the country’s official secrets law.
He has already been sentenced to six years in prison for illegally importing and possessing walkie-talkies, violating coronavirus rules and pushing against the military.
