German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and midfielder Marco Reus will not be in the starting line-up against Armenia on Sunday, and coach Hansi Flick will rest because the match has a full schedule.

Flick is already without Leon Goretzka, who was thrown in the face when Germany beat Liechtenstein 9-0 on Thursday, as well as suspended defender Antonio Ruediger.

The already-qualified Germans are also missing five players due to quarantine rules after defender Niklas Suele tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week.

“Manuel and Marco have played a lot of games so far,” Flick said in a virtual press conference on Saturday. “We’ve done that to control their load and to breathe a sigh of relief for the upcoming games they have to play.”

“This is the right path. They still have to play a lot of games, especially those who also play in international (club) competitions,” he added.

Flick said Barcelona midfielder Kai Havertz would also start at the gate of Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the starting line-up.

“The team here has our full confidence,” he said. “It can also happen in a tournament that someone is injured or penalized. That’s why alternatives are important.”

The Germans have already finished first in Group J and are 24 points behind Northern Macedonia, who are only ranked 15th in the group.

“Our goal is to finish at the top of the standings,” said the coach, who took over from Joachim Loew in September and has won six games so far, giving a German coach the best starting mark ever.

“We want to beat Armenia and we have to be vigilant in the back. He is a good opponent who wants to play well against us. We will have the necessary respect, but we also know our quality,” he added.
