SYDNEY (Reuters) – New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden has canceled her wedding as the nation imposes new restrictions to slow the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant community, she told reporters on Sunday.
New Zealand will set mask rules and restrict collections from midnight on Sunday after a set of nine COVID-19 Omicron cases were shown to the community spread from the North to the South after a wedding.
A family flew back to Nelson South Island after attending a wedding in Auckland and other events on the North Island. The family and an assistant plane tested positive.
New Zealand will go to the red setting in the COVID-19 protection framework, wearing more masks. Indoor hospitality settings such as bars and restaurants and events for weddings will be limited to 100 people. The limit is reduced to 25 people if the venues do not use vaccine season tickets, Arden said.
“My marriage is not going to go ahead,” he told reporters, adding that he felt sorry for anyone caught in a similar scenario. Ardern did not disclose his wedding date, but it was said to be immediate.
Asked by reporters how he felt about the cancellation of his marriage to Clarke Gayford, his longtime partner and host of a fishing trip, Ardern replied, “That’s life.”
He added: “I am no different, I dare say, from the thousands of other New Zealanders who have suffered the devastating effects of the pandemic, the worst of which is the inability to be with someone they sometimes love. Seriously ill.
New Zealand’s borders have been closed to foreigners since March 2020. The government rejected plans to gradually reopen it from mid-January to the end of February, due to an outbreak of Omicron in Australia.
Exceptionally, people who travel to New Zealand must apply for accommodation in forty state-run facilities. Last week the government stopped giving new slots due to the increase in the number of people arriving with Omicron.
About 94% of the population over the age of 12 in New Zealand is fully vaccinated, and about 56% of those eligible are vaccinated.
