[ad_1]

Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s Highlights coverage of the T20 World Cup 2021 match between New Zealand and Scotland from the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.

New Zealand beat Scotland by 16 runs

Player of the match: Martin Guptill 93 (56)

MATCH RECAP

New Zealand survived a brief scare to eventually eke out a 16-run victory over Scotland in a Super 12 match of the T20 World 2021 in Dubai.

Chasing a challenging 173, Scotland was off to a promising start as Matthew Cross smashes five fours off Adam Milne in the sixth over to take his side to 48/1 within the Powerplay after skipper Kyle Coetzer fell for 17. George Munsey perished after hitting two consecutive sixes off Ish Sodhi and Cross followed soon after to leave Scotland at 76/3 in 11 overs. The run-chase stumbled from then on as the batters failed to get a move on. With 65 needed off four overs, Michael Leask’s onslaught breathed some life into the contest but the Kiwis eventually held their own to sneak home.

New Zealand was stuttering at 52/3 after being put in to bat. Safyaan Sharif struck twice in the fifth over to remove Daryl Mitchell and skipper Kane Williamson while spinner Mark Watt got Devon Conway on the first ball after Powerplay.

Opener Martin Guptill and Glenn Phillips then joined for a 105-run stand to set up a big total for New Zealand. Guptill unleashed seven sixes en route to his 56-ball 93 and also became the second batter in the world to breach the 3000-run mark in T20Is as the Kiwis notched up 172 for the loss of five wickets in their 20 overs.

FULL REPORT: T20 World Cup 2021: Guptill’s 93 sets up NZ’s 16-run win over Scotland

Scotland innings

SCO 156/5 in 20 overs: Milne to bowl the last and Cross would be hoping from the dugout that he would have been here to face him. Single to long-on. Cut away to backward point for a dot ball.

SCO 80/3 in 12 overs: Santner returns with the ball. Just three singles from the over and SCO needs to get a move on here. After a brisk start the spinners swung the momentum back in NZ’s favour.

SCO 77/3 in 11 overs: Southee resumes at the halfway stage. Beaten! Nicks back into Cross as he looks to poke at it but pulls back in time. Close! Almost chops it on. MacLeod opens his account with a drive through cover for one. Just one from it and the wicket.

SCO 76/2 in 10 overs: Sodhi continues. Sodhi comes back well. Keeps it short and batters pull away just for singles. Berrrington chips one into the air but lands safe over cover and they take two. Just five from it.

SCO 71/2 in 9 overs: Santner continues. Santner pulls it back for NZ with just four from the over. Keeps it on off and bowls into the pitch.

In the slot and misses out this time. Inside edged onto the pad. 20 runs from the over.

SCO 28/1 in 5 overs: Southee comes back. Munsey pushes to cover for a single and that’s a first run after eight dot balls. Short and strays down the leg – wide. Cross drives to extra cover for a single and gets off the mark on his seventh ball. Munsey’s swings and misses outside off to end the over – beaten for the lack of pace.

SCO 25/1 in 4 overs: Milne replaces Southee. Good length outside off and nips back into the right-hander Cross and whizzes past the off-stump. BACK WITH THE CHASE

New Zealand innings

NZ 172/5 in 20 overs: Sharif bowls the last over. Santner beaten first ball outside off. Drives a slower one to mid-off for a single. Neesham digs out a slower yorker for two at square leg. Consistently jams in the wide yorkers and the batters find it hard to get it going. Wide down leg side and batters run. Keeper passes it to Sharif to dismiss Santner at the other end but he makes his ground. Yorker on the last ball and worked to deep midwicket for a couple. Just nine runs from that last over and Sharif wraps it up well. Scotland concedes just 23 runs in the last three overs.

NZ 163/5 in 19 overs: Wheal bowls out. OUT! Phillips goes and finally a wicket for SCO. Pitched short and straight and Phillips looked to pull it to clear the ropes. Gets the top edge that loops up to deep midwicket. Glenn Phillips c Chris Greaves b Brad Wheal 33(37b 0x4 1×6). Neesham the man in. OUT! Guptill holes out at 93. Looked to loft it straight over but handed it to straight to long-on. Martin Guptill c Calum MacLeod b Brad Wheal 93(56b 6×4 7×6). FOUR! Neesham ends the over with a cracking shot over mid wicket and on the bounce four.

NZ 155/3 in 18 overs: Watt bowls out. Yorker on the leg first ball and cramps Phillips. Precious dot ball. Two singles follow and Guptill is unable to take the twos…he doesn’t need to be needing them at the moment. Four singles and a leg-bye from the over and Watt delivers the goods again for SCO.

NZ 150/3 in 17 overs: Guptill is struggling with the heat and humidity but the man in-form hits another SIX! Pulls once more over deep midwicket. A brace and a couple of singles to end the over. That’s the end of Evans’ spell and he goes for 48 in his four.

NZ 137/3 in 16 overs: Sharif comes back into the attack. Three singles to start the over and Sharif goes full. SIX! Goes short and pulled away by Guptill over deep midwicket. Smart cricket from Guptill to look for th big shots on the shorter side of the ground. A couple for Guptill at long-off. SIX! Another maximum to end the over. A full-toss waiting to be hit and Guptill pummels it over midwicket.

NZ 120/3 in 15 overs: Wheal puts some pace back onto the ball. SIX! Guptill pulls and just over deep midwicket and over the rope. Wheal persists with the slower ones and the batters mistime it, digging it into the ground for singles. A searing yorker to Guptill to end the over.

NZ 110/3 in 14 overs: Watt comes back. SCO will hope he can put a brake as NZ looks it be taking the game away with this partnership. Just four from the over and Watt keeps it tight as per expectations.

NZ 106/3 in 13 overs: Greaves with the ball. SIX! Slog sweeps it big and that’s his fifty…in 35 balls. FOUR! Swept along the ground to the fine leg boundary. Dropped! Phillips heaves it high…and it looks handsome for a while…until Leask come under it at deepmidwicket to spill it!

NZ 92/3 in 12 overs: Evans comes back. Pitched on leg, Guptill gets a leading edge trying to flick on the on-side but lands safe behind the bowler. SIX! Short and Guptill stays rooted to the crease to pull it over deep square leg. Pushes to midwicket for one next ball. Phillips pulls it fine for just one.

NZ 82/3 in 11 overs: More spin as Michael Leask comes into the attack. A couple to Phillips with a backfoot punch. Two more to midwicket. SIX! Goes for the slog sweep and connects it to launch it over long-on and into the second-tier. Two singles to end the over. NZ might have just broken the shackles with this 12-run over. They are much at ease playing off-spin and Leask’s short length is helping their cause.

NZ 70/3 in 10 overs: Greaves continues. FOUR! A loose ball after a long time and Guptill cuts it away behind point for four. Eight runs from the over.

NZ 62/3 in 9 overs: Watt continues. Batters are finding it hard to get it away. Phillips slog sweeps a full one but is done for the turn. Thuds into his thigh but the appeal is turned down…going down leg probably. Just four runs from the over.

NZ 58/3 in 8 overs: Greaves comes into the attack. Punched off the backfoot by Guptill for a couple to deep square leg. Phillips is off the mark with a drive to sweeper cover for a single.

NZ 52/2 in 6 overs: Evans into his second over. A couple for Guptill first up. Good length is keeping Guptill quiet. He tries it flick it off the backfoot and inside edges it on his pads. FOUR! Launches it over mid-on and one bounce and across the rope. SIX! Flicks it over deep square leg for a maximum and that’s 3000 T20I runs for the man! Conway pushes one to mid-off for a single to get off the mark.

NZ 36/2 in 5 overs: LBW appeal from Sharif first ball and given! Mitchell reviews immediately. OUT! Review confirms the ball just clipping leg stump and it is umpire’s call. Pitched on short of good length, tailed in a bit and got Mitchell above the left knee on the front pad. Daryl Mitchell lbw b Sharif 13(11b 1×4 0x6). Williamson joins and starts off with three dot balls. OUT! Sharif strayed down leg and Williamson looked to clip it behind for four but knicked it to the keeper. Conway the new man in. Just a wide from the over and two wickets. Kane Williamson c Cross b Sharif 0(4b 0x4 0x6).

NZ 35/0 in 4 overs: Wheal changes ends. Mitchell pulls hard to deep square leg for a single. Guptill pulls to fine leg but slightly mistimed and just a couple. FOUR! First boundary for Mitchell as he smacks it hard past the bowler to the straight boundary. Not much timing on it but the force behind it propelled it. A couple and a single to end the over. Both batters are going for the big shots and are probably eyeing a huge total to bolster the NRR.

NZ 23/0 in 3 overs: Evans replaces Wheal. FOUR! Guptill’s cuts dissects point and cover this time and boundary for him. FOUR! Back of a length and backs away outside leg to swat it through cover and point again. Opens the face to guide it straight backward point for a dot.

NZ 15/0 in 2 overs: Sharif from the other end and starts off dead straight and Mitchell taps it back. Misses the pull and just a single. Guptill cuts hard straight to point. Cuts away to point again but a fumble will leak a single. Just two from the over. Brilliant from Sharif.

NZ 13/0 in 1 over: Good length and Guptill leaves the ball as it shapes away. Jags in and Guptill gets his bat out of the way just in time. FOUR! Full from Wheal and Guptill makes room on off and drives over mid-off for four. FIVE WIDES! Swings away too much from Mitchell, keeper dives but it runs to the boundary. Mitchell off the mark with a couple to third; just pokes it through the keeper and backward point. Pushes to mid-on for a single and that’s the end of the first.

Both teams take the knee before start. Guptill and Mitchell open the batting and pacer Brad Wheal with the ball.

Both teams assemble for the national anthems and the bagpipes blare as the Scottish anthem begins. Done with the anthems and live action begins shortly. Stay tuned!

Two lovely teams – two lovely kits! Are you ready for the contest?

MATCH PREVIEW:

A ruthless New Zealand will be eyeing a solid knockout punch of Scotland to strengthen its chances of qualifying for the semifinals in a Super 12 match of the ICC T20 World Cup here on Wednesday.

Handed a defeat by Pakistan in its tournament opener, Kane Williamson and his troops made a strong comeback in their next game. They produced a clinical performance to beat tournament favourite India by eight wickets, taking a giant stride towards a semifinal spot.

New Zealand needs to win its remaining three matches to make the last four, so the Black Caps can ill afford to slip up. They will also be eyeing dominant wins to improve their net run-rate which could come into play later on. Having already played Pakistan and India, they’re expected to breeze past Scotland and Namibia while the clash against Afghanistan could be tricky.

Scotland, on the other hand, entered the Super 12s stage high on confidence, having beaten all its opponents in the qualifiers but things have gone awry for the Scots as they slumped to back-to-back defeats at the hands of Namibia and Afghanistan.

Against Afghanistan, they were skittled out for a paltry 60 in 10.2 overs and were handed a 130-run defeat. In their second game, they were a touch better, managing 109 in 20 overs. But against a top team like New Zealand they will have to give a better account of themselves.

Scotland bowled its heart out against Namibia but its batters’ inability to put enough runs on the board led to its downfall once again. The batting trio of Richie Berrington, George Munsey and Matthew Cross produced the goods in the qualifying matches but its batting line-up has looked clueless in Super 12s.
