Taiwan expresses “great remorse” for the move, which allows it to have formal relations with only 14 countries.
Nicaragua ended its long-standing diplomatic relations with Taiwan on Thursday, changing its allegiance to Beijing, when it said it was a recognition of the Chinese Communist Party’s policy of China.
This move means that Taiwan, an autonomous island that claims to be China’s own, now has formal diplomatic relations with only 14 nations.
“The government of the Republic of Nicaragua has today broken off diplomatic relations with Taiwan and ceased to have official relations or official relations,” the foreign ministry said in a statement issued in Spanish and English.
“The People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents the whole of China, and Taiwan is an undeniable part of China’s territory,” he added.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry has expressed “deep regret” over the end of diplomatic relations.
“The Ortega government did not recognize the long-standing friendship and cooperation that benefits the people of both countries,” the ministry said on Twitter. “Taiwan remains untouched and will continue to be a force for good in the world.”
Most of Taiwan’s other formal allies are in Latin America and the Pacific. Beijing has sought to actively isolate Taiwan globally, excluding it from key international organizations such as the World Health Organization, stepping up its efforts since the 2016 election of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
Nicaragua’s move comes after the re-election of President Daniel Ortega “hypocrisy ” critics and condemned by the US, the European Union and the UK.
The deteriorating relations between the Liberal Democrats and Beijing, however, have heated up informal relations with the island in recent years. Delegations from the countries, including the Czech Republic and the European Parliament, visited, despite angry protests in Beijing.
Last month, Taiwan opened a representative office in Lithuania, Using his name rather than Taipei. China said it was a “tremendous move” and then severed ties with the Baltic nation.
