Nigeria has suspended Twitter after removing a message threatening to punish secessionists in the region after it was removed.
Nigeria will lift its Twitter ban after midnight (23:00 GMT) after social media platforms pledged to open a local office, among other agreements with West African country authorities, a senior government official said on Wednesday.
The Nigerian government suspended Twitter on June 4 after removing a message threatening President Muhammadu Buhari to punish secessionists in the region. Telecommunications companies have blocked access to Nigerian users.
Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, director general of the National Agency for Information Technology Development, said in a statement that Buhari had given his approval to the suspension.
“Twitter has agreed to abide by the laws and the national culture and history in which this law is built …” Abdullahi’s statement said.
The company would work with the federal government and the wider industry to “develop a Code of Conduct with global best practices applicable to almost every developed country.”

Abdullahi, who also chaired a joint technical committee of Nigerian and Twitter officials, said the U.S. company had agreed to appoint a country representative to contact the Nigerian authorities and comply with local tax obligations.
