South Korea warned on Monday morning that it had fired an “unidentified bullet” because Pyongyang had refused to ban weapons testing.
North Korea carried out what appeared to be a test of a ballistic missile on Monday morning, Japanese coastguards said as Pyongyang continues to pursue weapons testing that has led to a UN condemnation.
The South Korean military said the shooting was an “unidentified projection” that fell from the east coast into the sea. One country did not provide any other details.
North Korea has fired several shots since the start of the year, and last week announced a successful test of a hypersonic weapon. It was seen by leader Kim Jong Un.
On Friday, he was shot two missiles from a train.
Pyongyang, which has nuclear weapons, has been banned by the UN from testing ballistic weapons, and denuclearization talks have been stalled since the fall of a summit between former US President Kim and Donald Trump since 2019 due to demands to ease North Korean sanctions.
The U.S. Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned the U.S. for imposing new sanctions as a result of the tests, and Washington accused it of a “confrontational approach.” The United States is also urging the United Nations to take tougher measures against North Korea over the latest weapons test.
Some experts say Kim is returning to her old technique of firing concessions and using threats to get concessions out of the US.
