Not close to retirement, experienced Australian spinner Nathan Lyon says one of his long-term goals is to play a “big role” in a victory in the India Test series.
India has won the last three races against Australia, including victories in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 Down Under.
Australia, which last visited India in 2017, was due to do so in October this year, but due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the slot was used to host the T20 World Cup.
Lyon, who will turn 34 in a week, could play in India in 2023.
“One of the big goals is that I would really like to be part of an Australian team that can win an Indian Test series,” Lyon told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“I think I can play a big role in that too. That’s definitely one of my big goals. I think it’s one of the big goals on the part of the team. That’s a big focus.”
Ashes at home, starting next month, may be Lyon’s last against a regular England opponent, but the spinner says he’s still hungry and sees no reason not to play another one in 2025. , I don’t see why not, ”he said.
“I’ve always said this from day one: if I wake up one morning and don’t feel like getting better, then I have to get out of the game,” said Lyon, who is far from his 400th. Test wicket.
“But now I’m waking up hungrier than ever. I feel like I have a lot to give and I’m eager. I’m not going to end up with anything in my eyes.”
