KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) – At least 10 people have been killed and 11 others injured in a bomb blast at a Karachi bank branch built on sewage in the city’s industrial area on Saturday.
The cause of the explosion could be a gas leak at a branch of Pakistan’s largest bank, Habib Bank Limited, a senior police official said.
“Our explosives crews are working to find out the location of the explosion, but apparently the structure was built on drainage and could be the cause of the gas,” Sarfaraz Nawaz told reporters.
A gas station near the bank of Sindh Industrial Trading Estate and cars parked nearby were badly damaged.
Television footage showed the floor of the bench torn, revealing twisted iron bars.
Another Sharjeel Kharal police chief told reporters it was not immediately clear how many were killed or injured in the blast, as the bank had a skeleton worker on Saturday.
Construction laws are often violated in Pakistan. Several sewage drains have been concreted in Karachin for parking.
Last month, the country’s Supreme Court ordered the demolition of a multi-storey house built on a plot of land on the main road in Karachi.
