Pakistan’s Lahore city has been named the most polluted city in the world by air quality monitors because residents drowned in heavy smog are urging officials to take action.
Lahore had an air quality rating of 348 on Wednesday, well above the dangerous level of 300, according to IQAir, the Swiss technology company that manages the AirVisual monitoring platform.
“Children are suffering from respiratory diseases … for God’s sake, find a solution,” staff member Muhammad Saeed told AFP news agency.
Air pollution has worsened in Pakistan in recent years as diesel smoke, seasonal crop smoke and colder winter temperatures make for a mixture of stagnant smog clouds.
Lahore, a bustling megacity of more than 11 million people in Punjab province near the Indian border, is among the worst cities in the world due to constant air pollution.
In recent years, residents have built their own air purifiers and filed lawsuits against government officials in a desperate effort to clean up the air, but authorities have been slow to say smog is blamed on India or that the figures are excessive.
“We are poor people, we can’t even afford the doctor’s charges,” said trader Ikram Ahmed.
“We just begged them to control the pollution. I am not a literate person, but I have read that Lahore has the worst air quality and then comes Delhi from India. If he continues like this, we will die. ‘

Saeed’s staff said, “I used to come first [for a walk] with my children, but now I don’t go out with them. ‘
“There are factories and small industries working here, or moving elsewhere, providing compensation or providing modern technology to get rid of this smog.”
