The attack on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was banned by the TTP group when two men were shot dead by another policeman and one day.
A gunman who was guarding a polio vaccination team in northwestern Pakistan was shot dead in a second such killing in two days, police said on Sunday.
The attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with the Pakistani Taliban, two men known by the acronym TTP, was shot dead by another policeman who was guarding a similar vaccine group in the same area and happened one day.
“Two motorbikes were fired on a police officer guarding a women’s polio vaccination team in the Sheikh Uttar area and killing a police officer who was killed there,” District Police Chief Sajjad Khan told AFP.
Another local police official, Amanat Ali, confirmed the incident and said the attackers had fled.
No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but a TTP spokesman earlier denounced Saturday’s attack.
The armed group reported that the month-long ceasefire agreement with the government had ended and the attacks took place within three days, with authorities accused of violating the terms of the one-month truce.
No progress has been made in the new talks with the Pakistani government, according to an audio message released by Pakistani Taliban leader Noor Wali Mehsud on Friday night.
Poliomyelitis remains endemic
Prime Minister Imran Khan announced in October that the government was in talks with the group for the first time since 2014, backed by the Afghan Taliban, which seized cross-border power in August.
The TTP, a movement separate from the Afghan Taliban, plunged Pakistan into a deadly period of violence after its inception in 2007.
Police in Pakistan have been under attack in the past, mostly at the hands of armed rebels at home, who say vaccination campaigns are a Western conspiracy to sterilize children.
Pakistan is one of only two countries that continues to have endemic polio, but in 2020 it will be the only case after 84 cases this year, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
Polio is a disease that especially affects children and can make people crippled for life.
In 2014, the WHO made it mandatory for all people traveling from Pakistan to have a polio certificate, even though the ban is not being effectively enforced.
