Papua New Guinea has withdrawn from the Zimbabwe Women’s World Cup qualifier after several members of the team tested positive for COVID-19, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday.

Papua New Guinea was scheduled to face the West Indies on November 21, the opening day of the playoffs on December 5, but is unable to present a team. The 50-year-old team entered the Port Moresby quarantine on October 30 and was due to leave for Zimbabwe on November 6.

“Multiple PCR tests have been conducted almost daily to try to allow players to be negative,” the Papua New Guinea cricket committee said in a statement.

“We also worked with the ICC over the weekend on flight options so we could give the team more time to tour. Unfortunately, not all of the team’s extra travel efforts were successful.”

The ICC said Papua New Guinea would not be represented in Group A, which includes Sri Lanka, Ireland, the Netherlands and West India. Group B, made up of five groups, includes Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Zimbabwe and the United States.

The three teams in the qualifying tournament will meet New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa and India at the 2022 World Cup in March and April in New Zealand.
