Travis Head says he is in “great space” to finish fifth in the Australian line-up, racing in a series of Ashes that he believes will be decided by batting.
New skipper Pat Cummins said on Sunday that Head, who lost in the home series against India last year, had beaten Usman Khawaja in the middle order for the first test against England, which will start on Wednesday in Brisbane.
“I feel like I’m in the right place,” he told reporters in Gaba on Monday, with a tone of less than 40 years on average.
“The last two years have been very strong in (Sheffield) Shield cricket, now that these learnings have led to Test cricket.

“Several times there have been opportunities to take that place. I’ve taken my chance a couple of times, let it slip a couple of times. That’s what happens. I feel like I’m in a great space to try to take that space. And help Australia.”
Head won his first of 19 championships against Pakistan in 2018 and played four of the last five games in England’s last Ashes series in 2019, which tied Australia 2-2 to own the ballot box. The 27-year-old from South Australia believes that the next series will compete equally and that a team of batsmen will win.
“We talked a lot about how good the two bowling attacks were in that series, and who could get the most runs,” he added.
“It’s about putting pressure on a global bowling attack … As a batting team, knowing the conditions very well is taking advantage of the opportunity and getting very high scores.”
