Ponting questions England’s decision to pick more than Woakes Wood

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has questioned England’s decision to select Chris Woakes ahead of Mark Wooden for the second Adelaide Oval Ashes test.

Woakes claimed a wicket for 103 runs in the first 23.4 innings when Australia took control of the test, with the home side hoping to build on the Brisbane series ’initial win.

Ponting said the inclusion of Woakes over Wood in the first test had a detrimental effect on the whole of England’s Ben Stokes.

“It seemed to me that Stokes would give him a job, running and throwing bouncing balls,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.

“When he finally had a chance to throw a new hitter and throw the ball, he got a second ball to (Cameron) Green.

“Woakes wasn’t effective again; I don’t know why they were worried about picking Adelaide when Wood came.

“To me Wood would give a lot more variety in attack and then Stokes could throw and throw like an ordinary player, and he’s good at that, and Wood could take on the role that Stokes had.”

Ponting criticized England’s captain Joe Root and his limited approach to his bowling attack.

“In addition to the short ball plan that Stokes executed (on the first day), England didn’t have a big plan after that,” Ponting said.

“It simply came to our notice then.

“Well, when you’re bowling against two of the top three batsmen in the world, they’re not going to make mistakes. You have to find a way to get them out and change things.”

Australia went 473-9 before declaring the first inning, and England responded 17-2 at the end of the second day’s match.
