WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Renowned Dr. Mehmet Oz said Tuesday he would run for a Republican seat in the U.S. Senate for Pennsylvania, shaking up what could be one of the most competitive in next year’s congressional election.

Oz, which organizes the “Dr. Oz Show” union, brings a big name recognition on November 8, 2022, in a wide-ranging competition that can decide Senate control and the fate of Democratic President Joe Biden’s agenda.

Biden won little in the Pennsylvania 2020 election, but the Republicans won in the state legislature. Many observers hope next year’s race will be a draw after Republican Sen. Pat Toomey retires.

He was one of seven Republican senators who voted to oust former President Donald Trump in January after Trump was ousted.

Oz rose to fame by impressing the audience with displays of rotten lungs and rotten livers, telling the audience to take care of themselves.

His public image took a hit in 2014, however, when he told lawmakers that some of the products promoted in his session were looking at fake ads for diet products https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-senate-oz-idINKBN0ES2RN20140617. it lacked “scientific collection”. At the hearing, senators focused on the extract of green coffee beans, a dietary supplement that Oz denounced in 2012 as a “miracle”.

In a statement Tuesday, Oz said he was working as a “conservative Republican” and described himself as a top surgeon and health advocate.

Race days include another Republican candidate, veteran military veteran Sean Parnell, who received Trump’s endorsement after his campaign ended. Parnell left after a verdict setting out allegations of domestic abuse against his wife, which Parnelle denied.

The Republican area also includes real estate developer Jeff Bartos.

Democrats have a small majority in the U.S. Congress ahead of next November’s election. The Senate is divided 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting votes in favor of the Biden party.

Democrats have yet to elect a candidate to run for the Pennsylvania Senate, with progressive Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman and moderate U.S. Representative Conor Lamb as seen as pioneers in the party’s nomination.
