(Reuters) – A rescue operation has been called for the release of a group of Canadian and American missionaries abducted in Haiti, a US-based Christian ministry group that organized a trip to the Caribbean nation on Monday.

“Other people who wanted to help us paid a ransom and donated money to continue the negotiation process. As you can imagine, we can’t say anything more about these negotiations,” said a spokeswoman for the Christian headquarters in Ohio. The aid ministry said in a press conference.
