“Respected” Cummins was prepared for the Australian captaincy – Gilchrist

Pat Cummins had to fire the Australian Test captain for the first time in response to Tim Paine’s resignation because he won the respect of his teammates as a leader, former skipper Adam Gilchrist said.
Australia will appoint a new captain ahead of Ashes after Paine resigned as a result of a “sexting” scandal last week. Gilchrist Wicketkeeper-batsman was a successful substitute for captains Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, including the Australian leader in six of his 96 Tests, including winning the first Indian series in 35 years on the 2004 tour.
‘Previous’
“I think Pat Cummins is a pioneer there. I have no problem being the first choice, ”the 50-year-old said Reuters.
“They should do this if he’s enthusiastic, and he should be pretty happy to take on the role as vice captain.”

Like other big cricket nations, Australia has been reluctant to name bowlers as captains, most of whom come from the top tier. Cummins would be only the second fastball specialist since Ray Lindwall led him in a test against India in the mid-1950s.
“I see no reason for Pat to come in as a fastball who can’t do that,” Gilchrist said.
“I think he’s got a lot of respect from everyone, really from his teammates in particular, so I think that’s going to be that they’re going to bow down.”
‘Integral part of the group’
Steve Smith, who completed a two-year suspension from leadership positions last year for his involvement in the 2018 Newlands ball handling scandal, is eligible to be captain and has expressed hope of being reinstated. However, experts are divided on whether the public would be willing to take on the attacker again, for a post often referred to as Australia’s “second highest office in the territory” after the prime minister.
Gilchrist said the 28-year-old Cummins rose as chief executive while Smith banned the leadership.
“I think Pat Cummins has become a more integral part of that team and has grown in knowledge of his game and the experiences he has had,” he added.
“I think someone else has gotten in on you while you’re away, to some extent. Steve Smith may very well take the lead again, but Pat Cummins will be the guy they play now. “
