WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on Tuesday to vote on legislation for China to treat its Uighur Muslim minority, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced after lawmakers reached an agreement.
“The House will pass this legislation today and send it to the Senate for prompt action and then ask the president’s desk for his signature,” Pelosi said in a statement.
The House last week approved a version of the bill banning imports of forced labor from China’s Xinjiang region, but the measure did not advance in the Senate.
House and Senate Republicans and Democrats have been debating Uighur legislation for months.
This commitment maintains a provision stating that all goods in Xinjiang, where the Chinese government has established a network of detention camps for Uyghurs and other Muslim groups, were done with forced labor to ban such imports.
China denies the abuse in Xinjiang, which supplies many of the world’s materials for solar panels, but the U.S. government and many rights groups say it is committing genocide in Beijing.
Republicans have accused Biden Democrats of slowing down legislation because it would complicate the president’s renewable energy agenda. Democrats denied that.
