Lewandowski set a Bundesliga goal record last season; Putellas moved Barca to the Spanish League and Cup double and the Champions League.
Robert Lewandowski, a Bayern Munich-based Polish footballer, holds the record for best male player at FIFA’s The Best Awards 2021, while Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas received the award for best female player.
Thirty-three-year-old Lewandowski set a Bundesliga goal-scoring record last season, surpassing Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi of Argentina and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool in Egypt for the award.
He scored a total of 48 goals for his club and the country in 2020-2021.
“I am delighted and honored to have won this award, and I am very proud of it,” Lewandowski said Monday.
Lewandowski scored three goals for Bayern at the weekend, bringing his current season record to 39 goals in 33 games.
The trophy was a consolation for the Polish striker who lost to Messi for the Golden Ball in November last year.
For Putellas, it was a double for the Spaniard, who beat Barcelona’s Jennifer Hermoso and Chelsea’s Australian striker Sam Kerr, as he did with the Golden Ball.
The 27-year-old midfielder had a great 2020-2021 season with Barcelona, taking the Catalans to the Spanish league and cup doubles and the Champions League.
“This cap is for everyone on the team,” Putellas said. “Today will be an inspiration for all of us.”
A special award for Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo won the Special Prize in recognition of setting a record for most international goals for his country, surpassing Ali Daei’s 109-year record in Iran.
The 36-year-old has now scored 115 goals in 184 games with Portugal since making his debut in 2003 at the age of 18.
“I never expected to break this record, and I thank my teammates for the last 20 years,” said Ronaldo, who holds a 140-goal record in the Champions League.
Senegalese Edouard Mendy of Chelsea and Christiane Endler of Lyon won the goalkeeper awards.
Chelsea received two coaching awards from Thomas Tuchel and Emma Hayes.
Erik Lamela, now from Seville, won the Best Goal award for his Spurs in the North London derby.
Christian Eriks’ player had to deal with a fall on the pitch at the European Championships and the Danish doctors and players won the “fair-play” award.
